The Flash Editors Recommend Books: Six of Crows

Published on

Our editor Beth has recently been enjoying Crooked Kingdom, the second book in the fantasy duology Six of Crows, by Leigh Bardugo! Here's what she had to say about it:

"Crooked Kingdom is the second book in the Grishaverse duology, Six of Crows (the sort-of-sequel to Shadow and Bone, which has been pretty big on Netflix lately).

I have to say that this is my new favourite universe, and this is my all-time favourite series. The writing style in six of crows is a huge step up from Bardugo's Shadow and Bone series (although I still absolutely adore that it) and the characters are some of the most compelling I've ever read - there is a canonically pan character of colour who is easily my favourite man in the world, a character with dyslexia (which is fascinating to see in a high fantasy universe), a WOC who is tiny but deadly and religious (which we don't get to see often enough), and a chubby BAMF lady!! But most of all, every character has their own trauma.

Usually, you either get good plot or good characters but Six of Crows is an exception. The plot is a heist-narrative with heist-appropriate intricacy. It's one of those books that is deliciously easy to read but so gripping you'll get through it in one go and realise you haven't eaten anything in like 12 hours.

If you enjoy high fantasy, criminal underworlds, LGBTQ plotlines that don't involve homophobic tropes, romantic plotlines that don't involve "I can fix him" women with serious esteem issues, and super powers - bestie, this is the series for you."

Beth is one of our fabulous editors, heading into her third year at Lancaster studying English Literature and Creative Writing.
